Chapter 4 - Thomas Made One Last Mistake

Table of Contents 7
Daniel lived in Wisconsin and worked as a high-school principal. He had spent years criticizing every man I dated and had once described Adrian as “a federal investigation wearing a suit.” The idea that someone from Adrian’s past might reach him because of me was unbearable.
We called immediately.
No answer.
His wife answered on the third attempt.
Daniel had left a school-board meeting almost an hour earlier.
He never came home.
My stomach turned.
Then an unknown number called.
Thomas.
His voice sounded older than I expected, almost ordinary.
That frightened me more.
He did not shout or threaten dramatically. He simply told me Daniel was alive and would remain that way if Adrian surrendered the archive before federal authorities obtained it.
Adrian was standing across the room.
Detective Cole motioned for everyone to stay quiet.
I asked Thomas why the archive mattered now.
He had already spent years hiding.
He could disappear again.
Thomas laughed softly.
Not anymore.
The archive contained evidence of financial crimes across multiple countries. If federal authorities obtained it and negotiated cooperation from Adrian, banks could freeze accounts Thomas still depended on. Former associates would know exactly how he betrayed them. Hiding would become almost impossible.
He was not trying to become powerful.
He was trying to survive the consequences of power he had already abused.
That made him more predictable.
I kept him talking.
He wanted to know whether Adrian was beside me.
I said yes.
Thomas demanded he speak.
Adrian took the phone.
For nine years, I remembered his voice becoming frightening whenever someone threatened me. This time, he did not threaten Thomas back.
He followed Detective Cole’s instructions.
The archive had already been transferred into secure legal custody under a negotiated agreement. Adrian could not simply hand it over even if he wanted to.
Thomas did not believe him.
He threatened Daniel.
Adrian’s expression barely changed.
Then I understood something important.
Thomas expected Adrian to behave like the man he had known years ago.
Proud.
Violent.
Certain he could solve everything personally.
Instead, Adrian kept talking long enough for investigators to trace fragments of the connection.
Twenty minutes.
Thirty.
Forty.
Thomas became frustrated.
People revealed themselves when control failed.
He mentioned hearing freight trains.
A church bell.
A highway overpass.
Small details.
Detective Cole’s team narrowed the location.
Forty-seven minutes after the call began, tactical officers entered an abandoned warehouse outside Milwaukee.
Daniel was found tied to a chair but alive.
Thomas attempted to escape through a loading corridor.
He was arrested.
I did not breathe properly until Daniel called me himself from an ambulance.
His first words were exactly what I expected.
“I always said your taste in men would kill me.”
I laughed and cried at the same time.
He had a bruised face, two cracked ribs, and an apparently indestructible sense of humor.
Thomas’s arrest broke the entire network open.
Wayne provided account information.
Mark cooperated.
Elena testified.
The archive confirmed old corruption cases and allowed authorities to trace money hidden for decades.
Some of Adrian’s own past came under scrutiny too.
That mattered.
He did not walk away untouched simply because he helped us.
His attorneys negotiated cooperation regarding several businesses inherited from his father. Some operations were closed. Assets were sold. People who committed serious crimes faced investigation.
For the first time since I had known him, Adrian’s power began becoming smaller.
He seemed relieved.
That surprised me.
He admitted something during one long conversation outside Emma’s therapy office.
He had spent most of his adult life maintaining an empire he inherited because he believed abandoning it would make him vulnerable.
Thomas had spent years proving the opposite.
Power created more people waiting for weakness.
Adrian began restructuring everything.
Legal businesses remained.
The rest disappeared gradually under oversight, investigations, and negotiated settlements.
Emma started therapy.
Grace did too.
So did Elena.
Mark remained in custody while his case moved through court.
Wayne faced charges for assaulting Emma in addition to the financial and identity crimes surrounding Grace.
One evening, after Emma fell asleep, Adrian sat across from me in my hotel suite.
I asked why he had never married.
He smiled faintly.
“You know why.”
I did.
That did not make the answer romantic.
It made it complicated.
Then he asked whether I had ever stopped loving him.
I considered lying.
“No.”
Nine years apart had not erased everything.
It had changed it.
I told him love was still not enough.
The younger Adrian would have argued.
This one nodded.
“I know.”
That was the first moment I allowed myself to believe we might someday become something other than two people connected by danger and unfinished history.
Not yet.
Emma needed healing.
So did I.
Adrian, whether he admitted it or not, needed to learn how to build a life where protection did not require control.
For once, we had time.
