For several seconds, I stood in the Chicago hotel room with one phone pressed against each ear, unable to understand how Adrian could still be speaking to me while Wayne screamed his name from five hundred miles away. Emma’s breathing came fast and shallow through the other phone, and somewhere downstairs men were shouting over the crash of furniture.

“Adrian, who is in that house?”

His answer came immediately. “My brother.”

I had met Luca Vale only twice, both times more than a decade earlier. He was younger than Adrian, quieter, and somehow more frightening because he never needed to prove anything. Adrian explained that Luca happened to be less than twenty minutes from Mark’s neighborhood when one of their men reported unusual activity at the house.

That explanation created a bigger question.

“How did your people know where Emma was before I gave you the address?”

Adrian went silent for half a second.

I knew him well enough to hear the answer inside that silence.

He had been watching.

Not me every day, he insisted when I demanded the truth. Nine years earlier, when I walked away and chose Mark, Adrian promised not to interfere with my life. He kept that promise in every visible way, but he never stopped paying for occasional security reports to make sure I was alive and safe.

I should have been furious.

Under different circumstances, I would have been.

Then Emma whispered, “Mommy, somebody’s coming upstairs.”

Adrian’s voice immediately hardened. He told me to tell her not to unlock the door until she heard a specific phrase.

“Your mother sent winter roses.”

I repeated it to Emma.

Footsteps moved closer.

Someone stopped outside her bedroom.

Then a calm male voice spoke through the wood.

“Emma, your mother sent winter roses.”

My daughter burst into tears.

She pushed the desk away from the door but still hesitated before opening it. Luca did not rush her. I heard him tell her his name, then explain that a woman named Sofia was with him and wanted to check her arm. No strange men would enter the room. Nobody would take her anywhere without my permission.

That detail mattered.

Whatever Adrian had become in the years since I left him, he understood this was my daughter, not an object his power entitled him to claim.

I told Emma she could open the door.

A woman’s voice soon replaced Luca’s. Sofia identified herself as a registered nurse who worked with Adrian’s security organization. She gently asked Emma where she hurt, whether she had hit her head, and whether Wayne had struck her anywhere else.

Emma admitted he had.

My stomach turned.

This was not the first time.

Wayne had slapped her three weeks earlier after she answered him “with attitude.” Another time, he grabbed her hard enough to leave finger-shaped bruises on her shoulder.

Mark saw both incidents.

He told Emma not to tell me because I would “overreact” and stop her from visiting.

I sat down on the edge of the hotel bed because my knees would no longer hold me.

Adrian heard everything.

His breathing changed, but his voice remained controlled when he spoke to Luca through another line. He ordered him not to touch Wayne unless anyone threatened Emma again. Police were already coming, and Adrian wanted every injury documented correctly.

The restraint surprised me.

The Adrian I remembered nine years earlier believed problems existed to be removed. The man on the phone seemed determined not to turn my daughter’s terror into another kind of danger.

Then Emma said something that changed everything again.

“Mommy, there’s another girl here.”

I stopped breathing.

“What do you mean?”

She whispered that after Luca reached her room, another bedroom door farther down the hall had opened. A little girl stood there wearing oversized pajamas and holding a stuffed rabbit.

Emma had never seen her before.

I heard Luca gently asking the child her name.

There was a long pause.

Then the girl answered.

“Grace.”

Adrian became completely silent.

I asked what was wrong.

When he finally spoke, the strength had gone out of his voice.

“Jessica, Grace is Luca’s daughter.”

His niece had disappeared eleven months earlier.

Her mother had vanished with her during a vicious custody dispute, and despite Adrian’s money, contacts, investigators, and every favor he could call in, nobody had found the child.

Until tonight.

Somehow, the daughter of one of the most feared families in the country had been hidden inside my ex-husband’s house.

The police arrived minutes later.

Mark started shouting that Luca was trespassing. Wayne tried to run through the backyard and was caught near the fence. Grace remained upstairs with Emma while Sofia checked both girls and waited for officers trained in child cases.

Adrian arranged a plane for me.

I started packing while still on the phone.

Before I hung up, I asked one more question.

“If Grace has been missing for eleven months, why was she in Mark’s house?”

Adrian’s answer frightened me more than anything else that night.

“I don’t know.”

For the first time in all the years I had known Adrian Vale, he sounded like a man who had finally discovered something his power could not explain.
