Mark looked terrible when I entered the interview room.

His carefully controlled confidence had disappeared. He had not shaved, his shirt was wrinkled, and bruising surrounded one wrist where restraints had rubbed his skin. Still, when he saw me, something familiar returned to his expression.

For nine years, that look meant home.

Now I did not know what any memory meant.

Mark started by asking about Emma.

I told him she had a fractured arm and multiple bruises.

He immediately blamed Wayne.

I stopped him.

“You watched.”

Mark lowered his head.

That mattered more than any excuse.

He admitted Wayne had become increasingly aggressive over the previous months. Mark kept telling himself he could manage him until the situation ended. When Wayne grabbed Emma the first time, Mark warned him not to do it again.

He did.

Mark still let him stay.

Fear had become his explanation for everything.

Then I asked the question that brought me there.

“Did you meet me because Thomas told you to?”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt despite everything I already knew.

Twelve years earlier, Mark worked for a corporate intelligence firm that sometimes crossed legal lines. Thomas hired him after disappearing from Adrian’s organization. Mark’s job was gathering information through relationships rather than technology.

When I left Adrian, Thomas believed I might still know names, accounts, safe properties, or people Adrian trusted.

Mark was assigned to get close.

The charity event was staged.

The accidental conversation was not accidental.

Even the book Mark carried that night had been chosen because someone knew I loved the author.

I remembered laughing when we discovered the coincidence.

There had been no coincidence.

I asked when the assignment ended.

“About a year after we married.”

I almost laughed.

“Our marriage lasted nine.”

Mark insisted that part was real.

He said he fell in love with me within months and repeatedly tried to stop reporting to Thomas. Thomas threatened to expose everything. Mark panicked because he believed losing me would destroy the only part of his life that had become honest.

Then Emma was born.

Thomas gained better leverage.

If Mark disappeared or confessed, the truth could destroy our marriage and potentially expose criminal activity that could send him to prison.

So he continued helping occasionally.

Introductions.

Financial information.

Addresses.

Nothing violent, according to him.

Until Elena.

Elena contacted Thomas after leaving Luca. She wanted forged identification and enough money to hide Grace permanently. Thomas helped because controlling Luca’s missing daughter created leverage against Adrian.

Months later, Elena regretted it.

She wanted out.

Thomas refused.

Wayne began moving Grace between properties.

Elena disappeared after a meeting in Miami.

Mark claimed she had not been murdered.

Thomas placed her inside a private psychiatric treatment facility under another name after she suffered a breakdown.

I asked why Grace ended up in Mark’s house.

Police pressure had forced Wayne to abandon another location. Mark agreed to hide the child for forty-eight hours.

Those forty-eight hours became three weeks.

Then Emma saw Grace through a partially opened door.

Wayne panicked.

He started intimidating my daughter because he believed she would tell me.

The first time he hit her, Mark told himself it was an isolated explosion.

The second time, he told himself everything would end soon.

By the third, Emma called me.

I stared at the man I once trusted enough to raise a child with.

“You were afraid of Thomas, so you let someone hurt our daughter.”

Mark began crying.

I felt nothing.

Not because I had stopped caring.

Because Emma had already cried enough for everyone.

Mark gave detectives Elena’s location.

A private facility in Michigan.

He also explained why Adrian’s people had been near his neighborhood before my call.

Wayne had secretly begun feeding information to Adrian’s organization.

That surprised everyone.

Wayne feared Thomas planned to kill anyone who knew too much once Grace was moved again. He contacted one of Adrian’s intermediaries and began sending small pieces of information in exchange for protection.

That was why Luca had been nearby.

They suspected Grace was somewhere in the region.

They did not know the exact house until my call confirmed it.

The same man who abused Emma had also become terrified enough to betray Thomas.

Cooperation did not erase what he did.

Detective Cole made that clear.

Then Mark gave us something else.

Thomas had spent years searching for an encrypted archive created during Adrian’s father’s era. The archive contained financial records, names of compromised officials, old informants, and enough evidence to destroy powerful people who believed those secrets had disappeared.

Thomas thought Adrian still controlled it.

Grace was leverage.

Then Thomas learned Adrian still watched over me.

Emma became another possibility.

My blood went cold.

Mark said he had repeatedly refused to let Thomas involve my daughter.

I looked at Emma’s bruises inside my memory.

His refusal had not protected her very well.

Before I left, Mark asked one final question.

“Did you ever love me?”

I stopped at the door.

“Yes.”

His face softened.

“That’s why this hurts.”

Then I walked away.

Detective Cole met me in the hall.

The Michigan team had reached the facility.

Elena was alive.

Weak.

Medicated.

But alive.

When investigators told her Grace had been found, she cried for nearly twenty minutes.

Then she asked to speak with Adrian.

And me.

Because according to Elena, Thomas was not finished.

He had already chosen another target.

My brother Daniel.

A man who had absolutely nothing to do with Adrian’s world.
